BSAS is once again hosting its R and Statistics Workshop.  10:30  Monday 19 August -  16:00 Tuesday 20 August 2019

This is a two-day practical techniques course aimed at postgraduate students in the animal sciences, and open to non-student BSAS members, that want to learn R and refresh their knowledge of statistics. It will be held at the University of Cumbria,  Learning Gateway, Fusehill Street, Carlisle, Cumbria. CA1 2HH.

Led by Dr Davina Hill, this hands-on course aims to make statistics clear, straightforward and fun.

• Getting started with 'R'
• Data processing in 'R'
• Distributions and correlations
• Comparing groups
• Regression analysis

This is also a great chance to meet students from around the country working in your research area.

Our workshop is aimed primarily at postgraduate students in animal science, but is also open to scientists in need of a refresher.

About the Tutor:
Davina Hill is Senior Lecturer in Zoology at the University of Cumbria, with research interests in the effects of weather on dairy production and behaviour, and adaptation to climate change. She holds a PhD from the University of Glasgow and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  She held postdoctoral positions at the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg) and SRUC (Edinburgh), and was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Zurich.  She currently teaches Research Methods and Data Analysis modules to students from a range of scientific backgrounds and has been developing and leading the BSAS R and Statistics course since 2013

By road
From the east, approach Carlisle from the A69.
From the north or south leave the M6 at junction 43 for Carlisle (A69).

Head into Carlisle along Warwick Road (A69). Turn left at the third set of traffic lights onto Greystone Road then turn right into Fusehill Street. The campus is the second entrance on the right.

By rail
Carlisle is on the main west coast rail line from London to Glasgow and also has a direct, cross-country connection to Newcastle. The campus is a 15-minute walk, or short taxi ride, from the railway station.
Please note that there is limited pay and display parking on campus. When campus parking is full there are ample pay & display spaces at the nearby Cecil Street Car park (CA1 1NL).  You can also visit the following website to find car parks in the city:

Turn right onto Fusehill Street and carry forward onto Myddleton Street. At the top of Myddleton Street, turn left onto Aglionby Street, this leads onto Tait Street where you will find Cecil Street Car Park on the left.

On-Street parking:
Two hour on-street parking is available on Fusehill Street. The University Reception team can provide parking disks upon request.

  • Places cost £90 for BSAS student members, including one night's B&B and Monday evening meal   

  • Full BSAS members are welcome to attend the workshop for £150/Non-BSAS members £250, plus the cost of B&B and evening meal.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS - BSAS R and Statistics Workshop

A confirmation receipt will be issued to all delegates and can also be downloaded from the delegates registration account. 

The conference will start on Monday  19 August 2019 commencing from 10:30 and finishing on Tuesday 20 April at 16:00 hours. A draft of the  programme will be on the website by the end of June.

The fee includes all course material. Participants will receive a set of theory notes and practical exercises to work through in each session under the guidance of the tutors.

A special low rate conference fee is offered to BSAS students/post graduates and one night's accommodation at Brampton Road Campus and evening meal.

Accommodation is available at Brampton Road campus, Carlisle, CA3 9AY.  Ensuite at £38 and shared at £33 (two people x one bathroom).  There is a limited number of ensuite accommodation. Breakfast will be served at Fusehill Campus. 

We accept payment using the following credit cards: Visa (credit and debit), Mastercard (credit and debit) , Maestro, Solo and Amex or you may prefer to pay by cheque, made payable to BSAS. JCB cards are not accepted. Please make your payment in £ sterling. Cheques must be drawn on a UK bank. Delegates can also request an invoice when paying online or contact the BSAS Office.

30 days prior to the Workshop full refund less a £50 administration fee. Within 30 days of the conference: No refund. BSAS will not be held responsible if for any reason the Workshop is unable to commence or curtailed early.

BSAS will not be held responsible for any loss or damage of personal items of the participants, tutors or organisers.

There are various pay and display car parks within walking distance of the venue.
